What does the Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50115) involve?

The Diploma of Beauty Therapy involves theory and practical work which aims to develop skills in a broad range of beauty therapy treatments and services. These may include facial treatments, nail technology services, make-up, aromatherapy, waxing, manicure and pedicure treatments, providing advice on beauty treatments and services, selling retail skin care and cosmetic products and co-ordinating a work team.

It is expected that those completing the Diploma of Beauty Therapy practice throughout their qualification to maintain the skills and knowledge learnt at the College.

After finishing the Diploma of Beauty Therapy qualification, you will be a fully qualified beauty therapist with a range of well-developed skills. Qualified beauty therapists can anticipate to find work within salons, spas and the wider beauty industry.

Marjorie Milner College recommends that as part of your course, you invite your family and friends to practice on during the client days held at the College. If you can’t find models, MMC will attempt to source clients for practical sessions.

What employment opportunities will I have?

Once you have completed the Diploma of Beauty Therapy you can confidently and competently start working in a Melbourne Beauty Salon. You may choose to travel around Australia and work in a series of different environments as the Diploma of Beauty Therapy is recognised Australia wide. You may also choose to move into different areas of the beauty industry including working with product companies, skin-care companies, cruise-liners or utilise your beauty skills overseas.

Delivery:

Classes follow the Victorian School term dates, with four terms to a year. Daily classes are held between 9:00am to 4:30pm at the Surrey Hills Campus within the scheduled intakes mentioned under ‘Study Options’.

Assessment Methods:

The Diploma of Beauty Therapy has all assessment methods outlined on the Training Plan for each unit. A brief overview of what assessments students can expect in the diploma course are:

  • Written assessment
  • Practical assessment

Equipment/Resources:

There is professional equipment and tools required to work within the Beauty Industry. These can either be obtained through Bev Greenwood upon enrolment or sourced by the student using the equipment list.

Eligibility Check for VET Student Loans 

VET Student Loans is a Commonwealth Government loan scheme which assists eligible students to pay for all or part of their Diploma of Beauty Therapy tuition fees.

Students are able to apply for VET Student Loans assistance directly with Marjorie Milner College.

VET Student Loans will not be approved for students that do not meet the below eligibility requirements as set out by the VET Student Loans Act 2016, Division 2 – Eligible Students

To be eligible for VET Student Loans you must:

  • Are an Australian citizen, or are an permanent humanitarian visa holder who will be resident in Australia for the duration of your unit(s) of study AND
  • Have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit
  • Are a full fee-paying/fee for service student studying a diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate or graduate diploma level course at an approved VET Student Loans provider; OR
  • Are a student subsidised by the Victorian, South Australian, Queensland, Western Australian or Northern Territory Government studying a diploma or advanced diploma course or a specified certificate IV course
  • Have read the VET Student Loans Information for 2017 booklet before you complete and submit the Request for a VET Student Loans loan form by the census date. (This is completed on-line through the E-Caf system.

PLEASE NOTE: A VET student loan gives rise to a HELP debt that will continue to be a debt to the Commonwealth until it is repaid in its entirety.

Entry Procedure

From 1st January 2017 onwards all students wishing to access VET Student Loans will also be required to complete a student entry procedure to determine their suitability for the course you have selected. This entry procedure requires students to meet one of the following requirements:

  • provide a copy of your Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (VCE for Victorian Students). OR
  • undertake a reading and numeracy assessment using an approved assessment tool and display competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Cores Skills Framework. The College will advice students of the process for undertaking LLN test.

Concession fee rates are available to eligible students who hold a recognised concession card, such as a health care card. Full fee payers and Diploma course students are ineligible for concession rates.

There are 13 core units in Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50115) in Italic. There are 12 elective units on the training plan (Plus 2 additional elective units). Marjorie Milner College delivers Elective Group C – Relaxation Massage and will require you to complete additional elective units to improve your employability skills. Program Unique Supervised Hours (PUSH) is worked off 72 days per year (2 days per week) with seven (7) hours of supervised training per day. There are approximately 504 hours per year of face-to-face training.
